Embarassing day for Sweden

12 Aug 2018
Sweden were overwhelmed by Ramblin Jesters by 42 - 7 in the semi in Copenhagen, after a performance lacking in spirit, skill and determination. That the Jesters were no superstars was underlined by the fact that they lost the final 10 - 7 to Hundested Spurs, a Danish team with a fair amount of international talent.

Where does Sweden go from here? I don´t know what the final squad was, but at least Sami and Neill had to withdraw through injury. The team seemed to be without any Sevens talent; they ran in bags of tries against mediocrities but failed to show a spark of ambition in the two games against the Jesters. Even the two or three established stars seemed well below form. On this showing I would find it hard to argue that a single squad member should be selected for the final European Grand Prix in Poland in September. Injuries are always a consideration but I would find it easy to name a different squad of 12 playing in Sweden who would wipe the floor with these Swedes in Copenhagen.
Sorry to be so negative, but no-one is more disappointed than I to see this gradual disintegration of what has been a great Swedish Sevens team.

Otherwise, Swedish champions Södertälje narrowly lost the final of the Plate after some good displays on Sunday.
